Director of Nursing
Title:Director of Nursing
Salary Range:Commensurate with skills and experience


Responsible for the organization and administration of the Nursing Department. 

Essential Responsibilities:

Clinical Nursing Practice

  • Demonstrates clinical expertise necessary to function as a role model for staff in order to evaluate quality of care and direct the activities of nursing personnel.
  • Regularly makes rounds, on all three shifts, attends resident centered conferences in order to assess the quality of resident care and to identify problems and needs; implements corrective actions as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates effectiveness in setting a strategic direction for the department of nursing in concurrence with Administrator and Executive Director.
  • Collaborates with health care team members in developing and implementing policies for resident care. Assures adherence to policies, procedures and standards of care.
  • Collaborates with department heads to establish interdepartmental policies and procedures to promote quality resident care.
  • Collaborates with the Administrator and Executive Director in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Quality Improvement in nursing.
  • Provides routine nursing report to the Administrator and Executive Director on the status of implementation of the quality improvement plan.
  • Evaluates and analyzes any identified resident care problem and conducts follow-up investigation.
  • Participates in the initiation, support and evaluation of research and improved methods of resident care.

Personnel Management

  • Evaluates the performance of individuals supervised.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings for all shifts including weekend in an open format to encourage the identification of current issues affecting staff; uses the forum for active problem solving.
  • Ensures that current job descriptions which outline the functions, responsibilities and

desired qualifications are available for each nursing position; reviews and revises as


  • Oversees that all performance appraisals are completed in a timely and complete fashion.
  • Counsels and disciplines nursing employees as necessary and maintain records of same.
  • Participates in the recruitment and hiring of licensed nursing staff.
  • Provides information and insight to the Education Department for orientation of nursing staff.
  • Facilitates the identification of current nursing staff learning needs and appropriate in-services and programs in collaboration with the Education Department.

Financial Management

  • Collaborate with the Administrator in the development and monitoring of staffing plan to meet resident needs and cost effective operations.
  • Responsible for the development of the annual operating and capital budgets for the nursing department, and review the budgets with Administrator and Executive Director.
  • Effectively manages expenses and supplies in relation to budget and level of department activity; analyzes trends and implements corrective actions.

General Administration

  • Collaborates effectively with other departments and health care disciplines to promote

smooth nursing department functions and actions.

  • Directs compliance of nursing services with long term care rules and regulations; develops and implements a corrective plan as needed. Responsible for communicating long term care rules and regulations to nursing personnel. Assists Administrator with annual survey process.
  • Provides adequate data in a timely fashion to the Administrator on any problem requiring more aggressive resolution than being achieved through traditional channels.
  • Participates in trial use of new products and equipment and makes recommendations as to their usage.
  • Reviews and responds to resident, family, physician, visitor and employee concerns, issues and problems brought to his/her attention, coordinating the efforts of department/organizational personnel to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
  • Is responsive to community inquiries in accordance with EBV policies.
  • Participates to the extent possible in community/professional organizations.
  • Represents the nursing department as required in a variety of organizational meetings.

Education Requirements:

Graduate from an accredited B.S.N. program, MSN preferred. Current RN licensure to practice nursing in the State of Ohio.

Experience Requirements:

Minimum 3 years management experience. Previous long term care and 5+ years experience preferred.

Other skills or certifications:

Basic computer skills including the ability to understand and utilize databases, spread sheet and word processing software.

Dimensions / Competencies:

Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated current knowledge of nursing practices, rules and regulations. Teaching, problem solving and leadership ability with a focus on providing quality care. Ability to perform any physical activity as required by the position.
